3D Games: "Cube": Excellent Freeware FPS Game
Cube is a game that has a potential to become the best freeware game ever in the genre of 3D Doom games (eg Quake). The game author has managed to code a game engine based on OpenGL and SDL that renders a 3-dimentionality that is truly amazing. On top of that, the rendering is lightning fast in comparison with other FPS games that I have played. What you won't see is the traditional handheld weapon that traditional FPS games have. Press ESC to enter the game menu where you can choose map, single/network mode and more. The single player mode recently includes spawning monsters. The author's homepage posts the current list of servers for network playing (we never explored the network option during reviewing). The game comes with a map editor and a good editor tutorial which allows you to create your own maps.
This update (after about 6 months) includes: new mapmodels, new textures, animation, a new soundtrack, and more.
